Chapter 15

Kenna checked in on a sweet rottweiler with terrible allergies and returned to the front desk, where Isabel was eager to share gossip. While Kenna wasn’t much for gossip, Isabel’s callow enthusiasm reminded her of her youth, when life was still full of infinite possibilities. That seemed like a lifetime ago.

“Seeing as you’ve got Cottonwood’s most eligible bachelor mooning over you—”

“I do not,” Kenna corrected her with a blush, although secretly, she enjoyed the idea of Lucas crushing on her. “Lucas and I are just friends.”

“Yeah, whatever. Everyone can see how he looks at you. So gross—and also, admittedly, swoonworthy. I wish someone was looking at me that way,” Isabel said with a slight pout. “But I might have found the next best thing.”

“Oh? And who might that be?” Kenna asked, intrigued.

“First, let me preface this with, I don’t usually date guys who are older than me, but there’s something so sophisticated about this guy that I can’t seem to help myself.”

“How much older is he?”

“I don’t know, maybe twenty years? Hard to tell. He’s in crazy good shape, and he’s just delicious.”

Kenna chuckled. “Well, be careful. Sometimes older men gravitate toward younger women because they are easier to control.”

“Girl, no one is controlling me, I can promise you that,” Isabel said with an airy laugh. “If anything, I’ve got him wrapped around my little pinkie.” Isabel shook her behind with a sassy expression, saying, “He’s all over this booty, if you know what I mean.”

Kenna laughed. “Okay, I believe you. Just speaking from experience, sometimes older men can hide terrible personality traits that younger women don’t catch until it’s too late.”

“You sound like a therapist,” Isabel quipped, rolling her eyes. “Sometimes it’s just about the fun, nothing serious, you know?”

“You’re right,” Kenna said, realizing she was being a wet blanket to the younger woman. Her experience with Leon had colored her lens. Maybe this guy was different. She had to learn to accept that not all men were monsters in disguise, something Lucas was helping her see. Kenna throttled down her alarm to ask, “So where’d you meet him?”

Isabel was delighted to share. “It was crazy, almost like it was fate or something. My horoscope told me that I was going to meet the love of my life soon, but I never thought it was going to be this soon! Remember that night you let me leave early to go out with friends—and then you had your little freak-out and I felt super bad? Sorry about that. Well, I was going to meet him in person for the first time, and we hit it off almost immediately. It was crazy!”

An odd, discordant chord twanged in her head. “Wait, what do you mean? You met in person for the first time? Is he from around here?”

“We met online, you know, through a dating app. And for once, the man actually looked like his profile picture. You’d be shocked at how many times men use pictures that are ten years old and now they’re fat and bald.
